AI tools hold real promise for speech-language pathology, but adopting them responsibly means confronting several ethical and practical challenges head-on. Before integrating any AI-powered platform into clinical work or recommending one to a family, SLPs need to understand where these tools fall short and what risks they introduce.
Data Privacy: Protecting Sensitive Speech and Health Information
Many AI speech therapy apps collect audio recordings, language samples, and personal health details, often from children. That data is extraordinarily sensitive. Under HIPAA, any tool used in a clinical setting must meet strict standards for data encryption, storage, and access control. Before recommending or using an AI tool, SLPs should verify several things:

The Regulatory Vacuum
Most AI speech tools marketed to consumers or clinicians do not require FDA clearance. They are generally classified as wellness or educational products rather than medical devices, which means they can reach the market without demonstrating clinical validity through peer-reviewed research. This places the burden squarely on individual SLPs to evaluate whether a tool is supported by evidence before incorporating it into practice. The bottom line: AI can enhance SLP practice, but only when clinicians approach these tools with the same rigor they would apply to any new assessment instrument or intervention method.
